used to+不定詞這個結構只有過去式,表示過去的習慣或狀態。 如果我們說某人 used to do something,我們的意思是不久以前他是有做這事的習慣,但是他現在已經不做了。同樣的意思要用現在來表示時,簡單現在式通常就够了。試比較:
He used to play cards a lot. 他以往常玩紙牌。
He plays cards a lot. 他常玩紙牌。
used to 有兩種形式:其一是助動詞(構成問句及否定句時不用do),另一
形式是普通動詞(要用do).用do形式比較不正式。(注意 use 與 used
在這個結構中的發音: 不是唸/juz//ju:zd/,而是唸/ju:s/,/just).
Did you use to play cricket at school?
(或是:Used you to play...?)

否定略寫式也有: I usedn't to like
表示某事發生的次數或發生時間的長短,不用 used to.
I went to France seven times. 法國我去過七次了。(不是: *I used to go to France seven times.)
I lived in Chester for three years. 我在 Chester 住過三年。(不是:
*I used to live in Chester for three years.)
置於句中位置的副詞(參看 23,24) 可以用在 used 之前或後。在used前面的位置在非正式的文體中比较常用。
I always used to be afraid of dogs. 我以往總是怕狗。
I used always to be afraid of dogs. 我以往總是怕狗。
不要把 used to+不定詞與 be used to+-ing (參看下一節)結構混淆:

be used to 後面可接名詞或-ing 形式,與 used to+不定詞的語意非常不同(見以上一節)。如果說某人 is used to (doing) something,意思是
說他常做這事或是常有這種經驗,因此這事對他而言一點也不新奇了。
